Douglas Elliman was founded in 1911 by Stephan Elliman in New York City. For most of the 20th century, the company operated primarily in Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs. The modern iteration of the company was significantly shaped by Howard Lorber, who became chairman in the early 2000s and drove major expansion into South Florida, California, and eventually the Mountain West.

The company went public as Douglas Elliman Inc. on the New York Stock Exchange in December 2021. The listing gave the company access to capital for geographic expansion and technology investment, and positioned it directly against Compass in the public-market narrative around technology-enabled luxury brokerages.

Douglas Elliman's agent roster includes some of the highest-profile names in residential real estate. The Altman Brothers — Josh and Matt Altman, known from the television series Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles — are among the most recognized agents in the company's California operation.
