eXp Realty was founded in 2009 by Glenn Sanford in Bellingham, Washington. The company was built on the premise that the physical real estate office was a cost center that added no value for agents, and that technology could replace in-person brokerage infrastructure entirely.

eXp World Holdings, the parent company, went public on the NASDAQ in 2013. The company operates through a virtual campus built in eXp World — a metaverse-style platform where agents attend training, meet with brokers, and conduct business. This model significantly reduces overhead and allows the company to offer more competitive commission splits and a revenue-sharing model.

The revenue-sharing program is one of eXp's most powerful recruiting tools: agents earn a percentage of the gross commission income from agents they recruit into the company, creating a network effect that has driven explosive growth since 2018. The model draws comparison to multi-level marketing structures, though the company operates as a standard licensed brokerage.

Several of the top-producing mega-teams in RealTrends Verified operate under the eXp Realty flag, including the Whissel Beer Group, which reported over $700 million in annual sales volume. The Neal & Neal Team in San Antonio and Daniel Koch in Atlanta are among other confirmed high-volume producers in the eXp system.
